Leading a generation of business owners, managers and entrepreneurs to achieve corporate objectives and maximize returns while minimizing risk, ITIL, or the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is quite simply the most widely recognized and respected system of IT best practices in the world.
Like technology itself, industry must evolve to keep pace with the demands of the savvy consumer in a connected world. Thus, ITIL V3, created in 2007, was updated to reflect technological advancements, emphasize proactivity and introduce the elements of design coordination and strategy and business relationship management in its ITIL 2011 edition.
While expanded, the ITIL 2011 structure remains essentially very similar to its previous interpretation, so it is now considered the current version 3 and the 2007 edition an extension of version 2. For those who earned ITIL V3 certification prior to ITIL 2011, no upgrade or bridging is required.
What’s New in ITIL 3
While for the purposes of the ITIL V3 exam, the 2007 and ITIL 2011 versions remain interchangeable, the latter does in fact include a few practical updates related to the future of IT service management. Building on the strengths of the previous edition, ITIL 2011 adds the elements of Strategy Management for IT Services, Demand Management and Business Relationship Management as well as the new roles of the Service Strategy Manager, Demand Manager and Business Relationship Manager to assist with these processes. Under the banner of Service Design, few differences exist between the current and former Version 3, however Design Coordination has been introduced as a new process to which Service Design components are now aligned.
